A Few More Green Cooking Tips!
• Limit your oven use. As a lower energy option use a toaster oven or microwave when possible. When a larger oven is necessary, the experts suggest skipping the preheat unless it’s a delicate recipe(soufflé for example….and count me in if it is!). Put several dishes in the oven at once.
• When replacing appliances look for Energy Star options
• Use the proper size pot for the burner, and use lids when possible as it reduces cooking time.
• Cook from scratch. Saves on packaging, long distance shipping of prepared foods, and fewer additives, so you know what you are eating.
• Buy local. In winter if you use fresh herbs, buy a potted plant and then you will have it for dishes for weeks(months?) to come. Maybe you can keep it alive for outdoor spring planting.
